Language and color resound loud and clear in the work of Oklahoma-based artist Edgar Heap of Birds (b. 1954). Historic and personal observations, urgent imperatives, and calls for justice offer an uncompromising and revisionist account of the militant and expansionist origins of the United States and their ongoing impact on the Native nations of North America, including Heap of Birds’s own Cheyenne and Arapaho tribal nation. Rather than presenting a linear narrative, Heap of Birds’s paintings, monoprints, and public interventions expose fragments of a broken wheel of history that demand the viewer to participate in its reconstruction.
